Senior / Lead Azure Data Engineer – Greenfield Build

Rate: £600 per day 

Contract: Outside IR35

Length: 3-6 months

Location: Remote first (occasional on-site workshops in Newcastle).

We’re looking for a Senior / Lead Azure Data Engineer to take ownership of a greenfield Azure Lakehouse build. This isn’t a role maintaining legacy systems — it’s a chance to define best practice data engineering from the ground up.

You’ll work with a Data Architect, ERP and Finance SMEs, BI Analysts and a Data Governance Lead to deliver a platform that drives real business impact. The role combines hands-on engineering with technical leadership — setting standards, mentoring engineers, and ensuring data is delivered at scale, with quality and speed.

Key Responsibilities

• Build and optimise pipelines in Azure Data Factory, integrating ERP, finance and CRM systems.

• Develop transformations in Azure Databricks (PySpark, Spark SQL, Delta Lake).

• Enforce the Medallion Architecture across structured and unstructured data.

• Define and optimise ADLS Gen2 storage and partitioning strategies.

• Implement CI/CD pipelines with Git and Azure DevOps (Bicep/ARM/Terraform).

• Drive automated testing, data quality and governance standards.

Skills & Experience

• Strong hands-on expertise in Databricks and ADF.

• Proven track record designing and optimising ADLS Gen2.

• Proficiency in Python and SQL.

• Experience leading data engineers and setting technical direction.

ERP or financial systems experience (COINS ERP in particular) is a plus.
